Originally
built in 1908 at a cost of $21,500, the McDaniel School House was named
for Joseph McDaniel, pioneer businessman, member of the McElhaney,
Haggard & McDaniel Mercantile Co. and President of the National
Greene County Bank.
The
McDaniel School House, with it's 2 1/2-story Neo-Classical brick
building, is a prime example of the high style architecture that was so
popular among Springfield's public schools throughout the first two
decades of the 20th century. It
was closed in the 1960s and used for adult education and an early
education center. In 2003, the McDaniel School House (listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings) became one of the first historic tax credit renovations for the Matt Miller Company.
Few changes
were made to the property during its period of significance, which lent
itself as a perfect fit with its new occupants, Bryan Colleges.
